Fidel's mark in the Cuban steel and mechanical industry

Fidel in the first Cuban sugarcane combined

The image of Fidel Castro commanding the first KTP sugarcane combination on July 27, 1977, is one of the snapshots that the Company "60th Anniversary of the October Revolution" jealously treasures in its historic seat.

On that day the Holguin factory was founded with the presence of the Commander, who was the manager of the idea of building a plant capable of producing machines that would free the machetero from the hard work of manual cane cutting. This, in turn, would increase the efficiency of the grass harvest. "Each of these machines," he said, "would have displaced 50 workers. Today each of these machines frees 50 workers from the hard work of cutting sugarcane. Every thousand of these machines means 50 thousand fewer macheteros, who will be able to devote their energies to other activities, ”said Fidel.

With the help of specialists from the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the work was carried out. Fidel was always aware. From there the prototypes of sugarcane harvesters would come out, which were disseminated throughout the country, for the good of the sugar agro-industry.

The factory increased its capacity to manufacture cane cutters, until it produced 600 annually and the spare parts required for their repair. Later, progress was made in the design and development of more efficient and productive combines, such as the KTP-2, KTP-2M, KTP-3 and KTP-4.

Later, the arrival of the special period in the 90's and the loss of the main customer due to the reduction in the number of sugar mills in operation, marked a new stage for this industry, which had to reorganize the process and dedicate itself entirely to the reconversion or reconstruction of old combined and the production of spare parts.

Since 2002, they began to venture into the diversification of their productions for other sectors of the economy, such as trailers, containers, stone mills, valves, gates, among others. And they are currently immersed in the improvement of new prototypes of sugarcane harvesters: the CCA-5000-M on wheels and the CCA-5500 on mats, which are put to the test in sugarcane crops.

Next to the combined factory, there is the mechanical company “Héroes del 26 de julio”, also inaugurated by the leader of the Cuban Revolution in July 1981, which, like its neighbor, becomes the backbone of the mechanical industry in Holguín , with the manufacture of agricultural implements necessary for the Cuban fields. “With this plant our mechanical industry receives a real gem. The mechanical industry was born practically with the Revolution, it did not exist before January 1, 1959… ”, this is how he referred to this industrial establishment that until today does not disappoint with the results obtained.

With the manufacture of agricultural implements and equipment and its constant improvement, this Holguin industry contributes to the substitution of imports and focuses on extending them to other markets in the Caribbean area.
